Deliveroo is a leading UK-based hyperlocal delivery platform that seamlessly connects consumers, restaurants, grocers, and riders in a dynamic three-sided marketplace. Focused on fulfilling time-sensitive orders has fueled Deliveroo’s rapid growth across 10 global markets. Today, the platform partners with thousands of restaurants and grocers, empowers thousands of riders, and serves millions of consumers, redefining convenience and accessibility in the on-demand delivery landscape.
Deliveroo sought a Vice President of Engineering and India Site Head — a strategic leadership role responsible for scaling its India operations. The appointed leader would report directly to the CTO in the UK. The position required a rare blend of technical depth and business acumen to oversee site operations from Hyderabad, build a strong engineering and product team, and manage cross-border collaboration with stakeholders in both India and the UK. As Deliveroo planned to expand its India footprint, the Site Head was expected to play a key role in shaping the center’s growth, driving cultural excellence, and aligning local execution with global objectives.
The role also demanded hands-on leadership, to guide Deliveroo through a complex architectural evolution, transitioning from a monolithic platform to a scalable microservices environment capable of supporting its presence in 10 international markets. Alongside addressing challenges like data privacy, security, and scalability, the leader would need to foster a collaborative and high-performing work environment, drive seamless product delivery, and position the India Site as a critical hub in Deliveroo’s global growth journey.
The mandate came with a set of challenges. Hyderabad’s talent market offered limited candidates who had seen global scale while balancing both technical and business leadership. To meet Deliveroo’s unique leadership needs, our strategy centered around identifying a candidate with a strong consumer tech background, proven business acumen, and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships across global teams.
After an extensive search, we identified Anup Gaurav, a Hyderabad-based engineering leader with a stellar track record. Anup brought with him deep experience from Stripe — one of the world’s largest payment ecosystems — where he had managed products and teams at scale in the fintech space. His earlier roles at Amazon, SapientNitro, and UnitedHealth Group helped him build a diverse foundation across consumer tech, product engineering, and stakeholder management.
Our proprietary Behavioural Metrics Model (BMM) identified Anup as a combination of Nurturer and Reconstructor — perfectly aligned with Deliveroo’s requirement for someone who could drive people-centric growth while spearheading tech transformation. Beyond identifying the right fit, we worked closely with Deliveroo and the shortlisted tech leader, offering end-to-end consultation on compensation structuring, including a thoughtful balance of cash and ESOPs. We also facilitated a seamless selection process, helping Deliveroo invite the final candidates to the UK for face-to-face evaluations.
With Anup Gaurav at the helm, Deliveroo’s India site is set to evolve into a strategic hub for global innovation and growth. His focus will extend beyond scaling teams to shaping a culture that blends engineering excellence with business impact. As the company sharpens its platform, expands its footprint, and deepens its market presence, Anup’s leadership will be key to driving both operational strength and long-term value creation.
