Porter stands as a comprehensive logistics platform, offering a seamless solution for businesses aiming to enhance their last-mile delivery efficiency. Established in 2014 by Pranav Goel and Uttam Digga, Porter has ascended to become India’s premier Intra-City Logistics Marketplace. The Soonicorn maintains a workforce of approximately 2500 highly skilled and dedicated employees. Porter is classified as a Series E venture and boasts a valuation of approximately $750 million. It is backed by investors such as Sequoia Capital, Tiger Global Management, Vitruvian Partners along with many others.

Porter operates with a mission to deliver the world’s best end-to-end logistics platform and revolutionize the transport logistics sector. They are present in over 18 cities in India, as well as in Dubai and Sharjah. Porter developed a real-time internet interface that connected and coordinated the delivery driver and the consumer. The business logic for order collection, vehicle allocation, and fare bidding is handled by Porter’s order management system. Porter facilities include hassle-free truck rental, transparent pricing, real-time tracking, and safe and reliable trucks. Porter has a spectrum of offerings in the last-mile logistics segment to address a varied range of shipment sizes – right from 1 kg shipments by two-wheelers to 4000 kg shipments by HCVs, such as trucks, two-wheelers, financing, insurance and International offerings.

Problem Statement

Porter was operating with a shared architectural framework across multiple business verticals. This contributed to higher costs and lacked confined boundaries—any disruption within one vertical affected the others. It was, thus, imperative to engineer an architecture that nurtured the autonomy of all eight business verticals. A pivotal task involved reshaping the service topology to become more orthogonal and independent.

Porter was looking for a Vice President of Engineering to better address the challenges of global expansion, including infrastructure hosting, regulatory compliance, and regional adaptation.

Solution and Execution

The leadership team at Porter was confident that they needed a tech leader with extensive leadership and software engineering experience. The leader should be able to manage a team of 70+ and deliver successful products in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Moreover, they wanted an individual who was a hands-on visionary and deeply passionate about the art of constructing exceptional software products. At the helm of Porter’s technology endeavors, the leader should be able to articulate and execute the engineering strategy and technical roadmap, harmonizing them with both – business aspirations and the prevailing market trends of the company.

Purple Quarter initiated the engagement by conducting in-depth consultations with the client’s leadership team to understand their specific technological and strategic needs.
