Mapping Walmart’s 100x Growth Journey with Mrinal Chatterjee as the VP of Engineering

Problem Statement

Walmart Global Tech was in search of a VP of Merchant Technology to spearhead a team of 300 engineers based in Bangalore and an even larger size based at Bentonville. They were looking to hire leaders from Amazon – their sole competitor. 

The new VP would be responsible for leading the architecture design and development of the in-house products, growing teams through effective hiring and mentoring, and providing organization-wide technology advisory. 

Solution & Execution 

Purple Quarter’s extensive search, backed by the Behavioural Metrics Model (BMM), identified Mrinal Chatterjee – an ex-Amazon techie and the co-founder of ShopClues as a suitable prospect for the position. With 24+ years of experience, Mrinal is an accomplished leader with expertise in architecture, design, engineering, and scalability, along with demonstrated capability to conceptualize and deliver. 

We completed this search in a record time of 78 days – from the introduction of his profile to offer acceptance. His leadership personality reflected the Reconstructor type – poised to reshape the organization's tech landscape with transformative strategies and vision.

Current Scenario

Joined in 2018 as the VP of Merchant Technology, Mrinal is now the Vice President of Engineering, Global Marketplace & Fulfillment Service (WFS) at Walmart Global Tech. His team is responsible for collaborating with business and product to define business strategy, year-over-year-goals and deliver platforms, services, applications, and APIs to help grow the business. 

Also, Mrinal was showcased in Forbes (2019) as a Senior Leader driving Walmart Labs India in Bangalore for his stellar performance. His team has delivered several innovative solutions, won hackathons, filed several patents, and continues to leverage new-age technologies like blockchain, conversational AI, AR/VR/XR to push the boundaries of helping sellers, customers, and businesses.
